1 (a). Phenomenon of blogging

Blogging nowadays is an addiction to people and it was created for people who share a same interest and it a place to write something interesting, for a group of friends, community and etc. It is also became a way for to comunicate with everyone since it is online, and people are communicate about what was happening and to happen, a discussion about certain matter. There is great power in blogging because there is great power in words and in communication, especially in communication that interacts.

In my opinion:

  1. Blogging can bring people who have a mind together and enable them to discuss and firm up their views.
  2. Blogging can allow people of different backgrounds to come together discuss and discover that they have more in common than they thought and by an interactive process redefine their view of the truth
  3. Blogging can give great influence to some bloggers.
  4. Like the invention of the printing press, blogging gives the potential for ideas to spread quickly. Ideas can also flow and form organically accross many different sites.
  5. Blogging can be fun!

"In Asia, blogosphere is surging forward with nearly half, 46 per cent, of those online actively blogging", (Parthajit, 2006). "While the blogging phenomenon is still not huge in Malaysia but it's picking up momentum", (Oon, 2007).

1 (b). Purposes behind blogging activity

Usually the people do blogging are and why:

o Professionals / business - to promote or advertising their products and share their information or etc since the blogs became a new phenomenon in the online.

o Interest groups / passion - since blogs are exists, people nowadays uses it as the way to share their interest, hobbies, passion and etc.

o Communicating with family and friends - the internet connect us with the people worldwide, so with blogging that become famous and famous, usually family and friends who are far communicate using blogs because it is easy and convinience.

Usually personal blogging not a waste of time but if the blogs are in not a proper way and mislead from it purpose it will become a problems. The good to avoid personal blogging is it can avoid a lots of things such as impersonation, identity expose, bad things and etc.

1 (c). Classification of blogs

There are many blogs exists now, depends on people interest, hobbies, passion and etc.
The classification of blogs depends on the people itself:

By media type:
  • o Vlog (Video blog)
  • o Linklog (Links to other sites blog)
  • o Sketchblog (portfolio or sketches blog)
  • o Photoblog (a photo blog)
  • o Tumblelogs. (mixture of medias)

By device:

  • o Moblog (blogs for mobile phones)

Genre:

  • o Political blogs
  • o Interest blogs
  • o Travel blogs
  • o Fashion blogs
  • o Hobbies blogs
  • o Project blogs
  • o Splog
  • o Food blogs

1 (d). Blogging community

"Communities are about shared interest. Blogs are about individual interests. There are enough blogs out there that there are bound to be many bloggers who share the same interests, and thus are born communities of shared interest amongst blogs. Communities, whether blogs or otherwise, stick together because those common interests remain strong and the connections between the people engage the community members," (Vinson, 2007).

One of the community blogging is:

To create a community blogs, you must have the owner of the blogs permission in order to get in or register because it is a community so you must have the permission in order to get in into the community or recognize as their "member". You can create your own community blogs if you have people who are blogging who have the same interest, hobbies, passion, things that can be share together and etc that are willing to join your community. Usually community blogs are created for students, business, and etc.

I think, bloggers need community to avoid them misleading or missuse the advantage of the blogs itself. In community bloggers, the things dicuss or share cannot be view by public or non-members of the community blogs, so it is safe. Or, in the example of Microsoft, bloggers are writing publicly about internal projects. Not only are they connecting Microsoft to the larger world, but they are connecting the community of internal experts to a wider world of experts outside the company. This builds an even larger community in which these people participate.

1 (e). Designing for online vs. print

il Weblog are form of a website but it is a little easy rather than creating a website. Its free from "Web Design".

Nielsen's (2006) stated what was the best to put in our weblog. He basically says that web writing should concise, scannable, and objective.

Nielsen’s (2005) tutorials on how to to write the web on the usability issues. He remind us to avoid this in our weblog. I stated a few of it:

  • o No Author Biographies No Author Photo
  • o Nondescript Posting Titles
  • o Links Don't Say Where They Go
  • o No shorthands please
  • o Mixing Topics

The differences of online & print design. That would be about the cost, online probably more save cost but print design cost a lot more. Online design are more fast rather than print design. Online design would have more audiences than print design. Online design have many segments that been devided and easy to find rather than print design.

1 (f). New forms of media publishing

The new forms of media publishing are the internet. Since the internet exists we can do anything with it. Through the internet, a lots of new things developed and developing such as website, blogs, forums, journals and etc. People nowadays choose to read online material rather than print material because it is convenience and fast. Doing business also easier now. Everything can be done online.

2. The purpose of this blog

The purpose of this blog created is to discuss about the blogging trend that currently occur in Asia or Malaysia. It is about the latest publishing or media issues on blogging. The target audience for this blog would be anyone especially people are in the same field of study that have same interest with me. What i want to achieve from this blog are to inform and educate people about the blog itself, the advantage and disadvantage of it. How people uses the blogs, it is good or bad, appopriate or unappopriate.

4. Regular postings on publishing/media issues linked to theoretical discussion and issues from extra source readings (from web/ print)

The first issue is the cartoons that insulting "Islam". I found a comics journal that was released on the Comics Journal Website entitled "Cartoons of Mass Destruction: The Whole Story Behind the Danish 12" written by Micheal Dean on 11 April 2006.

This issue regarding this matter have insulting many Muslims around the world. It's creates an anger and upset towards the muslim societies. The photo or drawing of Prophet Muhammad. It’s been a controversy because no one alive nowadays would have seen his face or even draw it. Gailman (2006) said, "I don't really think this is about the power of comics, other than the power that images have to transcend language". It’s wrong and inappropriate for the Muslims views because it potrait the Prophet. While Dean (2006), said this is the frist time and biggest ever comic-related news story.

Who to be blame?
In the journal, most of the people blame the cartonist as stupid that I would agreed for. It creates chaos. Many people demand an apology from Denmark, since they was the first to released the cartoons. It creates chaos around the world. In Khan (2006) article "Pakistan Kids Rally Over Prophet Cartoons" mentions about 5,000 kids in Pakistan chanting "Hang those who insulted the prophet" rallied in the latest protest againts the publication of cartoons of Prophet Muhammad. In his article, Opposition lawmaker Liaqat Baluch, deputy secretary-general of the coalition said "line should be drawn" between freedom of expression —the justification newspapers gave for reproducing the drawings, which Muslims consider blasphemous—and actions that offend cultural sensitivities and a freedom of expression that destroys world peace is against basic human rights." Baluch also said that, the EU must take steps to ensure that another controversy such as the cartoon dispute doesn't occur in the future.

What should have and what should not
Generally speaking, a good design should not have anything that will insult or raise anger of a certain community especially againts their culture or religion.

The second issue is about the blogging issue. The article was released on the Digital Media News For Asia Website entitled "Blogging is social phenomenon in Asia: report" written by Parthajit on 28 November 2006.

Blogging is a social phenomenon nowadays. Almost all people do blog. Why? Because blogs are a lot easier than creating a Webpage. Also blog is a place to share information, interests, hobbies, and etc. There are a lots of things can do in blog. So that why people nowadays do blogging.

The phenomenon in Asia
According to Parthajit(2006), a recent study or reseach done by Microsoft's MSN and Windows Live Online Services Business, Asia's blogosphere is surging forward with nearly half, 46 per cent, of those online actively blogging and people primarily blogging as a means to maintain and build their social connections and to express themselves.

Who do blog?
The report shows that in Asia, about 74 per cent people do blogs for family and friends, while blogs by work colleagues come second. But in Korea and India, respondents are most interested in blogs covering a specific topic of interest. Sporting personalities are only 8 per cent.

Politicians do blog?
Only 14 per cent shows that politicans blogging in Asia but in Malaysia, it shows about 20 per cent.

Business blog
The report show that half of respondents in India have a strong interest in business blogs and only a quater interested in South Korea.

Why do people blog
According to the recent research or study, half of respondent do blogging because blogs are trusted source of information and believing that blog content is trusworthy as traditional media. While a quarter of respondents believed, blog to be the quickest way to get the news and current affairs.

Malaysia
Well, its a different story in Malaysia. In Yoeh (2007) article "How should bloggers be classified", a recent report by Bernama, a Malaysian National News Agency, Malaysia Information Minister, Zainuddin Maidin wants to classify bloggers as professionals and non-professionals to prevent missuse of blogs. Zainuddin Maidin said during a press conference, "this classification will also facilitate the action to be taken against those found to have violated the country's laws". It is to ensure the blogs content was based on truth and not rumours since many bloggers are anonymous.

The third issue is Wikipedia

As a student, free sources would be enough for me. Wikipedia, online encyclopaedia to be an invaluable source of information. But the sources in Wikipedia are doubtful whether it is credible or not.

What is Wikipedia
Wikipedia is an encyclopedia written collaboratively by many of its readers. Lots of people are constantly improving Wikipedia, making thousands of changes an hour, all of which are recorded on article histories and recent changes. Inappropriate changes are usually removed quickly.

In Brian Bergstein article, "Wikipedia to seek proof of credentials; High-ranking contributor lied about being a professor of theology", mentions that even a high-ranking member of Wikipedia's bureaucracy used his cloak of anonymity to lie about being a professor of religion, the free Internet encyclopedia plans to ask contributors who claim such credentials to identify themselves.

We can do editing in Wikipedia?
Yes, it can. This is why people are asking about the Wikipedia credibility, because anyone can editing it. According to Ed Oswald article, "Wikipedia Credibility Under Fire Again", stated that some may be editing their own entries or intentionally posting false information . In terms of credibility, since anyone can edit the content on Wikipedia, its content should probably be used with a critical eye. There is no telling whether the person who last edited the page was really a knowledgeable expert or someone without any real knowledge of the subject mater who just wanted to edit the page or someone in between. Also, since posting often occurs anonymously, there is a lack of accountability that increases the questions about credibility.

The founder of Wikipedia
In the Ed Oswald article, "Wikipedia Credibility Under Fire Again", an investigation by Rogers Cadenhead of the technology Web log Workbench uncovered that the founder of Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales had changed his own biography for 18 times.

We can use Wikipedia for academic purpose?
From my view point, I think we can use Wikipedia for academic purpose but those sources from Wikipedia must come along with futher research.

The fourth issue is Movie Piracy

Since the internet developed and developing, piracy and copyrights become a big issues. The internet really bring someone a big money but it also cost someone a lots of money. Movie piracy become worst and worsen nowadays, many countries tries to terminate them using numerous of plan. The main sources of imported pirate film DVDs in the UK are Pakistan, Malaysia and China, while Russia has a thriving counterfeit market.

"Preventing Movie Piracy; Researchers are developing tools to thwart the copying of films in theaters" article by Kate Greene mentions that Paris-bases Thomson, provides technology to the entertaiment and media industry, is expoloring methods for thwarting at least one type of bootlegger; the convert camcoder user. The techniques are involves inserting 'artifacts' such extra frames, or pixelated grid patterns into movie during its digital-processing phase before it is deliver to the cinema. Jian Zhao, chief technology officer of subsidiary Thomson Content Security , says The goal is to mar a camcorder recording without degrading the images moviegoers see.

What UK Film Council tries?
From the BBC News Network, I found an article about "Crackdown urged on film piracy" , stated that UK Film Council is urging a change in the law to tackle the problem of fil piracy and illegal DVD sales. They recommended a new powers to settle down this issues and also suggesting the use of camcoders to record films in cinema is a criminal offense.

What will Malaysia do?
Using dogs sniifing disc to counter-measure piracy. An article by Julia Zappei, Malaysia to form canine anti-piracy unit, mentions the Malaysia Governement hopes to obtain special dogs trained in Ireland to sniff out bootlegged DVDs to combat piracy.

The Peer to Peer Network
Piracy works in peer to peer network. It is such as easy way to get a movie, just download it from people. Sharing software such as Kazza, just surf what you looking for and then download. Simple. Now there are tons of peer to peer network available on the net. In some cases, University, an artile by Joe Vester "University ranks 2nd for movie piracy" mentions that movie piracy works towards sharing between universities in United States.

How to end of this?
From my opinion, its hard to solve or terminate this issue because it is people demand and needs. Also it brings lots of money. When it can bring a lot of money, the people will still find a way to create and sell piracy movie even the government tries to bust it in numerous of way. I think it is the internet fault. Without internet, the piracy issues will be slow and without internet, we will become uncivilized.

5. Reflection on weblog

Since this is my first time creating a blog, to be honest I found it very hard but interesting. Complicated but fun. The skills that I acquiring during creating this weblog is be a blogger itself. Feel the passion of blogging.

However, I found several difficulties at first regarding the layout and the blog itself. About how to arrange the topic and the page. Finally my header works, after several hours editing it. Simply says, weblog are easier than creating a webpage. Since nowadays, blogging are a phenomenon, I think I would have my own blog soon. I won’t be left behind. I felt wonderful with blog because it is a tool that is easy and anything can be post on it.

Nielsen’s advice to our weblog is to be concise, scannable, and objective.

Web users have to be responsible about themselves or others when using new media such as blogs because certain sensitive matters need to be avoided. A blogger should not misuse the blog. This is a place creates for us to share what we want to share, so don’t misuse it. We must be wise because our blogs can be access by anyone. To blog, we must have a purpose and reason.
